Canadian Geese
Branta Canadensis

Family: Anatidae
Length: 25 –45 inches long
Wingspan: up to 75 inches
Description: The male and female look the same. They have a grayish brown upper body and a lighter breast area. Head and neck are black except for white area on each side of face and underneath, which makes them easy to identify. Their bill is black and well as feet and legs.
Habits: often seen in very large numbers flying and on water. Can be very noisy when landing and getting ready for flight. They walk well on land.
Diet: Aquatic plants and sometime grazes on land.
Mating: Monogamous
Nest: Nests near water. Eggs hatch in about 30 days. Goslings leave the nest in a day or two. They are a fuzzy greenish yellow.
Migration: Some will migrate, but many will stay through the middle and upper U.S.
Whitin Pond: We see them year around on the pond, but very few in the summer. Hundreds in the winter.
