Description: The males’ overall color is red. Both male and female have crested heads. The male has a black mast around the eyes and under the bill. The bill is shaped like a come and is pale reddish in color.
The female has a red tip on her crest but has a drab brownish gold head. An olive upper area and light brownish udder parts. A reddish bill with a small area of black around bill. She has light reddish feathers on wings tips and tail.
Habits: The male fights to protect his territory.
Diet: Seeds, insects and fruit.
Mating: Monogamous
Nest: Solitary nester. Grayish, blue or greenish eggs with flecks.
Migration: Nonmigratory
Whitin Pond: We see mostly in the spring and summer on the pond.
