Bald Eagle

 Family:  Accipitridae 

 

Length:  34 – 43 inches long 

 

Wingspan:  6 – 8 feet

 

Description:  Our national bird. Their bodies are dark brown with a white head and tail.  Feet, legs and beak are yellow. Young eagles are very large and mostly dark brown with a few white patches under wings and underneath body. Male and female look the same.

 

Habits:  Can been seen perched in trees, solitary or in groups.

 

Diet:  Hunts mainly for fish but will capture injured waterfowl and small animals.  With its’ powerful clawed feet this is an easy task for eagles.    

 

Mating:  Eagles are thought to mate for life.

 

Nest:  Is a solitary nester.  Eaglets hatch in 33 – 46 days and stay in nest up to 98 days.  Fed by both parents.

 

Migration:  a migratory bird 

 

Whitin Pond:  Usually seen in the winter months on the pond.

 

The eagle is a protected species.
