Great Blue Heron

Family:  Ardeidae

 

Length:  46 – 52 inches long

 

Wingspan:    77 – 82 inches long

 

Description:  The Great Blue Heron has a prehistoric look when in flight.  Its’ body is bluish gray, with a whitish neck and long yellow bill.  The adults have a black area on top of head and black feet and legs.  Male and female are very similar.  The heron makes a loud squawking noise when startled or angry.

 

Habits:  This bird stands in the water or shoreline patiently for long periods of time waiting for prey.  May be seen anytime of day or evening.  They often perch in trees.

 

Diet:  The heron eats mostly fish and small aquatic animals.  They are great at fishing. The heron strikes lighting fast and grabs or spears the prey with its’ long powerful bill.

 

Mating:   Monogamous

 

Nest:  This heron nests in trees.  Eggs hatch in about 30 days.  Young heron leave the nest in 2 – 3 months.

 

Migration:  Birds in the north migrate.

 

Whitin Pond:  We see the Great Blue Heron year round on the pond.
