Length: 10.5 – 11.5 inches long
Wingspan: 22 – 26 inches
Description: The male is has a bluefish gray head , crest and upper parts and a white band around neck, White under parts with a blue gray stripe across the chest. Powerful long black bill. Female is mostly the same, except for rusty color on stripe, belly and flanks.
Habits: Very common. Solitary.
Diet: Fly’s over water and dives for fish, insects and amphibians
Mating: Monogamous
Nest: Solitary nester. 5 - -8 whitish eggs that hatch in 24 days.
Migration: Some birds migrate
Whitin Pond: Seen on the pond all year around.
