Wingspan: 12 – 14 inches
Description: The male is black all over with the exception of a red patch on shoulder area tipped with yellow. The female is drab brown with white markings though out.
Habits: One of the most widely populated birds in North America. A gregarious bird.
Diet: Insects, caterpillars, snails and spiders
Mating: Males can be polygynous
Nest: Nests in colonies. Eggs hatch in 11- 12 days. Eggs are blue green with spots or uneven lines
Migration: Migratory
Whitin Pond: Seen on the pond in spring, summer and fall. Builds nests in pond plant growth.
