Family:  Bombycillidae

 

Length:  7 inches long

 

Wingspan:  11 – 12- inches

 

Description:  Brown head with a long crest. Brown back and black eye mask edged with white Brown breast and sides, with a pale yellow belly, Gray tail with yellow tip. Red tips on flight wings.  Male and female are similar in looks.

 

Habits:  Very social birds

 

Diet:  Fruit, insects, sap and sometimes flowers

 

Mating:  Monogamous

 

Nest:  Mostly solitary nesters though some nest in colonies.

 

Migration:  Migratory

 

Whitin Pond:  Seen on the pond in late winter and early spring.
