Wood Duck

Family:  Anatidae

 

Length:  17 – 20 inches long

 

Wingspan:  28 – 30 inches

 

Description:  A very unusual looking but beautiful duck, especially the vibrant colored male.  The male has and iridescent green crest, red eye, white, red, black and yellow bill. White lined areas on both sides of face and around the neck. He looks like he has been hand painted. The female has a drab brown body, gray head and white around eyes.  Blue markings on wings.

 

Habits:  Timid birds. Like to perch in trees.

 

Diet:  Dabblers. They ear plant material, insects, tadpoles and other small water creatures.

 

Mating:  Monogamous

 

Nest:  Solitary nester. Eggs hatch in about 37 days. They will lay 9 – 15 eggs.

 

Migration:  Wood ducks will summer in many northern states.  They winter in Mexico. Permanent in some southern states and pacific coastal areas.

 

Whitin Pond:  Seen on the pond in the winter and spring.
